Explore the Area

Rural tranquillity is our 'speciality'!

This is a rural area off the beaten track. We overlook the valley of The River Teme which creates the border between England and Wales.

The surrounding area is ideal for exploring by foot, bike or horse...within a short distance there are lots of interesting things to see and do.

Touring
Our nearest towns are Knighton and Newtown. In Knighton you'll find the Offa's Dyke Heritage Centre and the Powys Observatory, both well worth a visit. The road to Newtown is spectacular, taking you past the source of the River Teme, and as you drive over the top you will more than likely see Welsh mountain ponies on the hill. For a lovely way to explore the surrounding villages and countryside you could try touring the Churches of St Michael.

Clun Castle Ruins, shropshire   History

The area is steeped in history, myth and legend. This being border country, there are several castle ruins in the area. Just down the valley you will find the mound of
Knucklas Castle. Slightly further afield are the spectacular ruins of Clun Castle and Montgomery Castle. As well as these, there is of course the famous Powys Castle just outside Welshpool. The Shropshire towns of Clun and Bishops Castle are fascinating to visit, where several festivals a year and lots of interesting galleries and craft shops await you.

Cycling in the Area
This is a fabulous area to explore by bike. There are lots of quiet country lanes which are fun to cycle and an extensive network of foot and bridle paths if you enjoy off-road cycling.

Running the Beacon
Although much of the Beacon tends to be un-waymarked, this area provides excellent terrain for cross-country running. It is a challenge.

Activities
Why not try rally driving with the Phil Price Rally School or gliding with the Black Mountain Gliding Club.

For a really unique way to experience the area then why not try a 'Dragon Drive' in the spectacular Radnor Forest. You can choose from an hour to a full day with picnics and pub trips.

Further Afield
Places possible to visit in a day from the Brandy House include the Elan Valley, Lake Vernwy, Machynlleth where you will find Celtica and 'experience the world of the Celts', and the Alternative Technology Centre. Even the sea is only 1.5 hours away!

Powys offers some wonderful fishing opportunities. Visit Fishing Around Newtown in Powys or the Fishing in Kite Country web site for more information.

On the Powis Estate Showground in Newtown each September, enjoy a weekend of exhibitions, activities and demonstrations to celebrate the natural power and beauty of wood at the
Powis Wood Fair
